A short tutorial for new survivors, and the Waymark Hatchet

First-time players can learn the basics on a tiny island in a few minutes, then sign up to keep a hatchet skin you can only get there. The main game loads while they play, so joining a server afterwards is much quicker.

A survivor holding a stone hatchet walks along a tropical beach towards a marker on the shore, with a small clip of the current lesson in the corner of the screen.

Tutorial

New players now start on a very small island of their own and learn by doing. It takes a few minutes: chop a tree, mine a rock, pick hemp, craft a stone hatchet, break a barrel, lay a foundation, raise a wall and walk to the boat.

  • Each lesson is a short clip from the game, a beam of light on the spot and a picture of the key or mouse button, with almost no text.
  • Yields and recipes are the real ones, so what you learn carries over. Crafting is sped up and your survivor doesn't get hungry or hurt.
  • A big welcome card offers the tutorial when you first open the site. Skip it, or hold J at any point to leave, and go straight to the servers.
  • If you close the card with the X or Esc, it asks again on your next visit. It doesn't show if you're signed in or have already played.

The Waymark Hatchet

Finish the tutorial and sign up with Discord or Google to keep the Waymark Hatchet, a glowing green stone hatchet skin you can only get from the tutorial. It's one per account and can't be traded. If you play on without signing up, the reward waits in that browser for the first account that signs in there.

Sign up to keep it, or play without it.

Faster first join

The main game downloads in the background during the tutorial, so joining a server after it takes about half as long as a new player's first join without it. In our tests on a 50 Mbps connection that was 22 seconds instead of 45, and the tutorial itself started in 14.
